2. I’ve been admitted to NJIT and accepted to the Jersey City Cohort, but I need to defer my enrollment. How can I do this?
Congratulations on being admitted to NJIT and joining the Jersey City Cohort! Please contact jerseycity@njit.edu for assistance with deferring your enrollment.
3. May I receive credit for graduate-level courses taken in the past?
In principle – yes. You may receive credit towards an MS degree for up to nine (9) credits of graduate-level courses taken in the past, provided the course(s) meet the following criteria:
- Must have been taken at a university in the USA
- Must have been completed within the past seven (7) years
- Must not have been used in the fulfillment of a previous degree
- Must be very similar to courses required for your MS degree
- You must have achieved a grade of B or higher
A few exceptions apply (e.g. if you studied these courses at NJIT, even as part of a degree program, you may “double count” them). This requires completion of the Transfer Credit Form, including approval by the relevant academic advisor.
4. Can Jersey City Cohort students still access the NJIT Newark campus facilities?
Yes! Although we are geographically located in downtown Jersey City, you can still access any of NJIT’s student services and resources in Newark–all you need is an NJIT Newark ID card! You can find instructions on how to receive your NJIT Newark ID via postal mail here. (Please note that your NJIT Newark ID is separate from your access card for the Jersey City location, which can only be obtained on-site.)
We invite you to enjoy recreation and fitness activities at the Wellness and Event Center, borrow materials from the campus library, plan your courseload with your academic advisor, participate in student involvement events and opportunities, and seek advice from Career Development Services. Our Jersey City cohorts are designed for convenience and to expand and complement your experience, not to limit it!
5. I am a Jersey City Cohort student enrolled in a Certificate program. How do I continue on to a full MS program at the Jersey City location?
To earn a certificate, you must have earned a minimum average GPA of 2.75 across all four certificate courses. If your minimum average GPA across the four certificate courses is at least 3.0, eligible students may transfer to a full MS program offered at the Jersey City location at any time subject to academic approval by the appropriate MS program director.
You may request this transfer (subject to approval) before completing your certificate if you are performing well and are eager to transfer. If your request to transfer to a MS program is approved, all your certificate course credits will be counted towards your MS degree.
For more information, please contact jerseycity@njit.edu.
I completed my graduate certificate with a cumulative GPA under 3.0. Am I still eligible to apply for the full MS program?
Congratulations on completing the requirements for your graduate certificate! If you passed your certificate courses and have a cumulative GPA under 3.0, the certificate will be noted on your academic transcript. However, since admission to our MS programs requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, applicants with a cumulative GPA under 3.0 are not eligible for admission.
6. I took a fall/spring semester off without maintaining registration with NJIT and my UCID has become inactive. Do I need to reapply for admission to NJIT and to the Jersey City Cohort?
Yes! Please contact jerseycity@njit.edu with any questions regarding readmission to NJIT and to the Jersey City Cohort.
